Filming Science
in Antarctica
A film laboratory for school students, where a scientific idea travels from pitching to real expedition filming.
The idea
Science becomes a personal discovery
The project brought together schoolchildren, scientists, filmmakers and polar researchers. Participants found a subject, built a story and filmed their own science films.
Project leader: Marina Klochkova. The project was supported by a grant from the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives.
How it happened
From idea to screen
A long journey in which a school student becomes an author and researcher.
Film laboratory
Teams worked with scientists, directors and polar researchers, learning screenwriting, filming, editing and project presentation.
Fieldwork
Winners filmed on the Antarctic Peninsula; prizewinners worked in the Baltic region and at the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Films and premieres
Four popular-science films were presented to audiences in Moscow and Novosibirsk, including at Russian Geographical Society venues.

Four films, four views of research
The films span field science, research work, Antarctic ice ecology and medicine in isolation.
