Around Gran Canaria The passage from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Puerto de Mogán, around Gran Canaria, was hot and almost windless. Only the head sea left by two weeks of southerly winds—unusual for the Canaries—gave the stem a rather inhospitable pounding. Fifty miles of sunbathing and another round of testing the two autopilots—the windvane and the electric one—and it was already time to drop anchor... The minor inconveniences of the anchorage off Mogán are the abundance of holidaymakers darting around on jet skis, pedal boats and various other watercraft, and sometimes even swimming. Excursion boats, constantly entering and leaving the harbour, kick up a wake. But the beauty of the place makes it easy to ignore such trifles: we aren’t the only ones who want to linger amid all this loveliness. In the south of Gran Canaria, it’s African heat. It feels as though, after covering those 50 miles, Lady Mary has moved into an entirely different climate zone. I wrapped the wheelhouse in an awning and rigged a wind scoop over the forecabin hatch. The result: +36°C outside, +28°C in the wheelhouse, and properly freezing in the forecabin. I go there to get cold 🙂
