Receiving Weather Forecasts via Satellite Internet Algorithm, services, links, charts. We have to receive weather forecasts via satellite internet whenever we are more than two days away from shore. What do you need to analyse the weather along your route? A weather chart. It shows conditions in a selected area at a specific time (now, in 24, 48 or 72 hours). A GRIB file. It shows how the requested parameters change over time (wind speed and direction, wave height-period-direction, isobars, etc.). Obtaining a GRIB file We use the Saildocs service. Area — a GRIB file for the area bounded by coordinates 3N 2S W90 W82, with a 0.5-degree grid and a forecast period of 0, 6 and so on up to 72 hours. Parameters — atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, wave height and direction. Send an email to query@saildocs.com Put anything you like in the subject line, and write the following in the body of the email: send gfs:N3,S2,W90,W82|0.5,0.5|0,6..72|PRMSL,WIND,HTSGW,WVDIR Within a few minutes, a reply containing the GRIB file will arrive at the email address from which the message was sent. Obtaining a weather chart We use the NOAA.gov service. Here, the message you need to send is a little more complicated. Send an email to NWS.FTPMail.OPS@noaa.gov Again, put anything you like in the subject line. In the body of the email, enter the following text — Open Cd fax Get PYFA90.TIF Quit Where PYFA90.TIF is the file for the required weather chart.
