How to Set Sail Around the World. A Film

A circumnavigation through the eyes of those taking part—a man, a woman, a teenager and a child. A film by the Travely-Family sailing expedition. Guess why we disappeared off the radar? 🙂 A circumnavigation does not exactly come with regular internet access... But that is not the only reason. After the shipyard, Lady Mary set a course for the Islas del Rosario, 15 miles from Cartagena. And so we traded the internet for blue water. Around lunchtime on the 11th, I suddenly remembered that my beloved My Planet was once again holding its annual awards, where two years ago we came second and even won a grass-green windbreaker, which has served us faithfully ever since ☺. But it wasn’t about the prize. We had decided not to write any competition entries. And then there was also a category for “Amateur Travel Video”.... So, long story short, I told my lot that submissions for the awards closed in four days. What a shame we had nothing to send in. By evening we were thinking: “Why not make a film about circumnavigating the world? We’ve got three whole days!” There was no internet, of course—it was back in Cartagena, a day’s sail away, or half a day at the very least. So, the deadline was four days away, leaving us three full days. Sort through the archives, choose the footage with the steadiest picture (we’re not exactly professional camera operators ☺), shoot whatever else was needed—or rather, whatever we could—edit it, write the text, find music... oh, and learn the editing software, which, luckily, Andryukha had downloaded the week before. Piece of cake... Our First Film About Circumnavigating the World And so, for the next three days, we made the first film of our lives (the previous home video doesn’t count). We set up the studio in the wheelhouse of Lady Mary, anchored off the Colombian islands. Our entire production setup consisted of one laptop, a Sony camera and footage shot over several years on a phone and a well-used GoPro. Needless to say, no one launched the dinghy, went ashore or explored the mangrove channels. And that was how we spent five days hanging out among the islands )). For special effects, editing and sheer determination to win, the captain received the honorary title of the crew’s chief Steven Spielberg. On the 15th, we weighed anchor and charged off at 20 knots, straight into a headwind, towards Cartagena and its internet connection to upload the film. Phew, we uploaded it.
