We’re Leaving for Easter Island!

We’re leaving for Easter Island! Right now. The chain the captain is hauling in is already clanking. Extraordinary, but true! It was yesterday, of all days, that the local shop ran out of apples. It was yesterday, of all days, that most of the yacht crews completed their departure formalities for leaving the Galápagos. The apples were snapped up before we got there—and all evening and all morning, the crews of about six yachts have been discussing over the radio and in person how they’ll sail to the Marquesas. We’re saying goodbye to everyone with, “See you somewhere in the Pacific”—because of the dozen yachts leaving today, we’re the only ones heading for Easter Island. Right now, this very second. And the Captain has already called the sailor to weigh anchor, while the first mate tries to use up the last of our mobile data (we can’t just let it go to waste like we did at Las Perlas when leaving Panama). For that very reason, since five this morning an unbelievable number of technical posts from the “Tech from the Cap” section have been uploaded to the website. Alone to Easter Island According to the statistics, 30 yachts a year call at Easter Island. Our friends from Austria made it there safely a month ago and anchored. Some other friends from New Zealand are under way there right now; they’re writing via satellite that they’re making good progress. We’re next. This morning, Nastya was already lamenting: Why aren’t we sailing to the Marquesas with everyone else right now?... Why indeed? )) Why does hardly anyone sail to Easter Island? Far off any established routes headwinds unfavourable currents My dad devoted his entire adult life to mountaineering.
