🧭 PREPARATION CHECKLIST FOR ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION PARTICIPANTS (A guide to preparing for a journey to the end of the Earth)

You have already taken the first step towards the edge of the map. Soon you will meet the White Continent. This guide helps you prepare your documents, equipment and expectations for the voyage.

βœ… EQUIPMENT

Start with the essentials. Comfort in Antarctica depends on appropriate clothing. The main principle is layering.

Clothing and footwear:

ο‚· Fleece jackets and thermal underwear – warmth and freedom of movement.

ο‚· Several pairs of warm socks, both thermal and cotton.

ο‚· Tall waterproof boots with insulated liners for shore landings.

ο‚· Comfortable non-slip boat shoes or slip-on shoes.

ο‚· A waterproof shell jacket and water-resistant trousers.

ο‚· Insulated jacket and trousers as an extra layer over fleece.

ο‚· Gloves and a spare pair in case the first gets wet.

ο‚· Two hats – one windproof, one warm.

ο‚· Sunglasses against glare, ideally with a retaining strap.

Personal items:

ο‚· Toiletries, sunscreen and moisturiser.

ο‚· Waterproof cases for electronics.

ο‚· Personal first-aid kit and necessary medication.

ο‚· Thermos for hot drinks.

ο‚· Swimsuit for anyone attempting a polar plunge.

βœ… DOCUMENTS

Before departure, check:

ο‚· Your passport is valid for at least six months after the journey.

ο‚· Your manager has received a passport photo or scan for the crew list.

ο‚· Visa requirements depend on nationality. The original Russian checklist states that Russian citizens do not need visas for Argentina and Chile, while Kazakhstani and Belarusian citizens need a Chilean visa. Confirm current requirements with official authorities for your nationality and travel dates.

βœ… INSURANCE

ο‚· Insurance must cover search and rescue.

ο‚· The source checklist specifies at least €100,000 of coverage.

ο‚· Coverage must include Antarctica and the rest of the world.

ο‚· Insurance may be arranged through a bank or insurer; premiums depend on age and trip duration.

βœ… FLIGHTS

ο‚· The source itinerary suggests Moscow / your city – Buenos Aires – Ushuaia.

ο‚· Several flights operate between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia.

ο‚· Arrive at least one day before the expedition to recover from the journey.

ο‚· Allow at least two days after the expedition before your onward flight, as weather delays are possible.

ο‚· Choose a refundable ticket if available.

βœ… MEETING IN USHUAIA

ο‚· Participants meet by the yacht at Afasyn Yacht Club.

ο‚· For a taxi, ask for β€œAfasyn Yacht Club” or say β€œbarco” to help the driver find the marina.

ο‚· Consult the location on Google Maps.

βœ… PRACTICAL INFORMATION IN USHUAIA

πŸ’Έ Money and currency exchange

Bank cards are accepted in many places, but cash is useful, especially for taxis.

ο‚· The original guide recommends exchanging money in Buenos Aires, where rates may be better.

ο‚· It also mentions Nico's exchange office in Ushuaia, recognisable by a husky on the door.

βœ… BEFORE PUTTING TO SEA

ο‚· Send all copies of documents and insurance details to your manager in advance.

ο‚· Drake Passage weather is unpredictable – allow for changes to the schedule.

ο‚· Essential forgotten items can be purchased in Ushuaia, although prices are high.

ο‚· Bring curiosity, patience and the ability to be amazed, as well as your equipment.

May Antarctica be your personal proof that the impossible is possible!

See you aboard!
